This is one way to recruit.

Over 700 high school position players crammed North Texas’ Apogee Stadium facilities last Friday and Saturday, searching for an opportunity on the UNT roster. The Mean Green Elite Camp is the second such recruitment camp hosted by the university. The summer camp series will have an additional meet on July 27. The university also hosted a youth camp earlier in the week.

A year after the university made the jump to the American Athletic Conference, coach Eric Morris continues focusing on recruiting local Texas high school football talent. In his first season with UNT, coach Morris was able to sign 27 local athletes to the program—the most in the Lone Star State—including South Oak Cliff cornerback Taylor Starling and Houston North Shore safety Jayven Anderson. Coach Morris continues this focus from his days as a former UIW head coach, contrasting with DI program’s current strategy of utilizing the transfer portal to fill out the locker room.

Since March, the Mean Green have landed five players, including South Oak Cliff standouts Brandon Jones and Kerry Williams.

Of course, the concept isn’t exclusive to North Texas. Local universities such as Texas State, UT, UTSA, and many others will field their own summer camp series, allowing potential recruits to see what university coaches and facilities can offer.

UNT football kicks off the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31, in their first-ever matchup with South Alabama.
