6A Team of the Week: Roosevelt Rough Riders
San Antonio Roosevelt is quickly proving itself as Judson’s bogey team. When the two teams met in 2021, Roosevelt pulled an upset 28-21, denying Judson an undefeated district record.
Last Thursday, the Rough Riders did it again, knocking off the Rockets 27-23. It was their first win of the season and the first for head coach Darnell Barnes at the helm.
“I told them all week that it would take four quarters of hard work to win this game,” Barnes said. “I also told them that we would have to be solid and execute in all three phases of the game, and they did exactly what was asked of them! We controlled field position on special teams, blocked 2 kicks and took a kickoff return to the 5 yard line. We were aggressive on defense forcing 5 turnovers. And on offense we took care of the ball and closed the 4th quarter with a 4 minute drive to drain the clock.”
Roosevelt turned two of those five Judson turnovers into instant points as Joshua Gray had a scoop-and-score in the first quarter before Jamare Smothers added another in the fourth. Smothers’ return ended up being the game-deciding touchdown.

Defensive back Evan Renia also had a big night. He had both an interception and a forced fumble.
Offensively, the Rough Riders relied on their run game. Yall Louis racked up 64 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Jacorey Carrillo had 42 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Now, the Rough Riders will turn their attention to their first district game against Reagan this week. Barnes said his group is continuing to improve each week, and he’s excited to see how they’ll perform in their first district challenge.
