3A Team of the Week: De Kalb Bears
Don’t be fooled. Daingerfield may have been 1-4 heading into its showdown against De Kalb, but the Tigers were still expected to be a district title contender after a daunting non-district schedule.
They sure looked the part early on, jumping out to a 14-0 lead over the Bears. In that early going, the Bears also had a pair of turnovers and turned the ball over on downs in the red zone once as well.
However, they had no quit. The Bears answered with 24 unanswered points to grab a 10-point advantage in the fourth quarter. They then executed down the stretch with a stop on a late Daingerfield two-point conversion to earn a big 30-28 win.
Kayden Wherry was the Bears’ bell cow, racking up 191 rushing yards on 34 carries. He had two touchdowns, while Dom Dunn and Jaylen White also had rushing scores for the Bears. They finished with 424 yards as an offensive unit.
On the other side of the ball, the Bears held Daingerfield to just 220 yards. De Kalb head coach Troy Zeringue called it a “total team victory.”
The Bears haven’t won a district title since 2011, but they currently hold the top spot as the only 2-0 team in their district. They’ll have another big matchup this Friday when they host New Boston, who is currently tied for second in the District 10-3A Division II standings at 1-0.
