5A Team of the Week: Mansfield Summit Jaguars

Timberview was regarded as the favorite heading into its home district clash against Summit. It looked like those predictions were going to turn out to be true as the Wolves jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the third quarter.

Summit had other ideas. Jaguar quarterback Demarus Byrd only connected with receiver Domonique Young twice in the game, but they were potentially his two biggest throws. One was 17-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter, while the other was a 25-yard go-ahead score midway through the fourth.

Those two touchdowns propelled Summit past Timberview in a 21-20 nail-biter. The Jaguars are now 4-0 in district play.

Summit running back Adarion Nettles had the biggest output of any Jaguar skill player. He rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Byrd finished with 126 passing yards. His favorite receiver on the night ended up being Ian Gebhardt, who had four catches for 67 yards.

The win is a big one for Summit, who is looking to grab its sixth-straight playoff berth. Now, the Jaguars can continue to turn their focus upwards in the standings with a tough stretch of games ahead. Next up is a home showdown with the Argyle Eagles, the number five team in 5A Division II, this Friday.
