6A Team of the Week: Kingwood Mustangs

District 21-6A is one of the toughest in all of Texas with North Shore, Summer Creek, Atascocita, and C.E. King all manning the top four spots in the last couple of years.

No one had been able to play spoiler. Until this year.

Kingwood nearly pulled off a massive upset a week and a half ago when it took Atascocita to the wire before falling 42-41.

This past Friday, the Mustangs finally got their signature win as they hosted C.E. King. The game went to overtime with the score knotted at 14. Kingwood running back Marquez Davis scored on a one-yard touchdown on the first possession in overtime. And although C.E. King answered with a touchdown of its own, the Panthers missed the extra point, securing a memorable 21-20 victory for the Mustangs.

Davis had a heavy workload on the night, rushing for 95 yards and that all-important touchdown on 25 carries. Quarterback Landon Hinson threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Jailen Monegan was by far his go-to target with seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Joshua Arroyo also had a touchdown reception.

Defensively, Sam Peterson and Trace Taylor each had interceptions for Kingwood. Linebacker Cade Haug led the way with 14 total tackles.

With the win, Kingwood now has the inside track to its first playoff berth in five years. The Mustangs need to win just one of their final two games to lock up a spot. They’ll host Summer Creek this Friday before facing Humble on Nov. 9.
