6A Team of the Week: Cypress Lakes Spartans
Cypress Lakes has never made the playoffs in its 14 years of varsity football. The Spartans have only finished with a .500 record once.
At the halftime of their game this past Friday against Langham Creek, it looked like both those trends were set to continue.
The Spartans found themselves down 20-0. But with the chance to make school history at their fingertips, they came out ready to go to war after the break.
And that’s exactly what they did. Spartan quarterback Jimmy Alarcon threw for four touchdowns before Landon Bridges completed the comeback on a 31-yard run on a draw play as the Spartans edged the Lobos in a thriller 35-34.
Alarcon finished with 281 passing yards. Of his touchdowns, two went to Theodis Fields, while Julius Malone and Bridges each had one touchdown reception apiece.
Man I am beyond proud of this team. We were down 3 scored in the 4th quarter and overcame adversity and won it! Beyond blessed to be apart of this schools history ! @ScoutNickP @CoachCarter_19 @tdrecruits @CoachJMcClendon @SelectQb@TexasQBLab @CyLakes_FB@LoneStarPrepsTX… pic.twitter.com/VKVZAHUFRs

Of all the Spartan receivers, Malone was the most productive with four catches for 70 yards. Bridges, meanwhile, paced the ground game with 97 rushing yards on 12 carries.
Defensively, De’Shaun Butler kept the middle of the field on lockdown with 23 tackles from his linebacker position. In front of him, defensive lineman Roman Gonzalez made his presence felt with eight tackles and two tackles for loss.
Now, all eyes will shift towards Cypress Lakes’ final game of the season.
If Cypress Ranch beats Langham Creek, then the Spartans showdown against Cypress Springs this Saturday becomes a play-in game for the final playoff spot in District 16-6A. If Cypress Ranch loses and Cypress Lakes wins, then a three-way tiebreaker would have to be used to decide the final two playoff spots between Ranch, Springs, and Lakes.
That all-important game between Cypress Lakes and Cypress Springs will kick off this Saturday at 1:00.
