2A Team of the Week: Coleman Bluecats
A playoff win seemed the farthest thing from reality for Coleman when the Bluecats got off to an 0-7 start this season.
However, this team is peaking at the right time.
In their bi-district game against Wolfe City, the Bluecats used some late game heroics to secure a memorable 40-35 win.
Anthony Espitia scored with four and a half minutes to go to put the Bluecats up five.
From there, the Bluecat defense put the exclamation mark on a memorable performance.
“I really felt our over all poise kept us alive the whole time. We had some huge fourth down stops on defense,” Coleman head coach John Elder said. “Braden Torres had a number of key tackles, Micah Lackey ended up having the key interception. The defensive line played as physical as they have all season as well as our linebacker core.”
It was Lackey’s interception on Wolfe City’s final drive that sealed the victory for the Bluecats.

The Coleman offense also had a strong night, especially on thee ground. Elder praised the strong running of his three backs: Blaine Bouldin (83 yards and two touchdowns), Pauls Salas (45 yards and a touchdown), and Espitia (25 yards and a touchdown).
Young quarterback Hunter Edington also rose to the occasion with nine completions for 216 yards and a touchdown. His backs were two of his favorite targets. Espitia had four catches for 89 yards, while Salas had two catches for 73 yards.
In Elder’s eyes, it was a “perfect example of overall team effort to achieve a goal.”
Now, Coleman will shift its goal to advancing to the third round of the playoffs. The Bluecats will have another stiff test when they take on 10-1 Axtell in Weatherford on Friday.
