UTEP’s all-time leading rusher is off the board. On Saturday afternoon, UTEP running back Aaron Jones was selected in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers.
The former Miner was healthy for a full season in 2016, putting up an impressive 1,773 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground. He capped off his college career with a 301-yard performance and four touchdowns in the season finale against North Texas.
Jones becomes the first UTEP Miner since Quintin Demps and Marcus Thomas to be selected in the NFL Draft. Both of those players were selected in the fourth and fifth round respectively in 2008.
He may not have been the highest profile running back to come out of the NFL Draft process, but thanks to his work at the NFL Combine and in his Pro Day workouts, the former El Paso Burges Mustang saw his stock rise and will now get an opportunity to show fans outside of the Sun City what he can do on the field.
