Aldine Key Players and Storylines
Aldine has found its man. At Houston Sam Houston, Charles Brown III helped lead a struggling program to its best season in 21 years in 2022. He then spent the last two years as Mayde Creek’s defensive coordinator. Now, he takes over a Mustang program that didn’t score a single point in district play last year.
The Mustangs did have several underclassmen contributors, so Brown III does have players with varsity experience to work with. Offensively, tackle William Santa Rita is the lone player that is back that earned an all-district honorable mention. At the skill positions, the Mustangs return their bell cow junior running back Tariq Gray (173 rushing yards), while 6’0″ senior receiver Rigoberto Moya is the lone returning player who had a reception last year. Junior quarterback Jace Shanklin (141 passing yards) started every game a year ago.
Defensively, Moya (28 tackles) is also Aldine’s leading returning tackler from his cornerback position. Defensive end Esteban Jaramillo can be the Mustangs’ premier pass rush threat after earning an all-district honorable mention as well last season.
Aldine has not averaged more than ten points per game in a season since 2019. The good news is Brown III has been here before. He’ll look to help the Mustangs begin to make strides in 2026 after every loss last year came by 35 points or more.
