Hastings Key Players and Storylines
Hastings struggled to put points on the board a year ago. The Bears scored just 111 points in 10 games and 47 of those came in their lone win against Bellaire.
However, almost all of their key playmakers return this season with that experience under their belt. Quarterback Jarrell Lee (1,007 passing yards and six touchdowns) is a dual threat signal caller while senior running back Matthew Onwuchuruba (736 rushing yards) returns as the Bears’ workhorse.
Lee will also benefit from the continuity in the receiving corps with both junior Christian Collins (358 receiving yards) and senior Christian Oneal Simmons (216 receiving yards) returning.
Defensively, the Bears will boast a stout pass rush with returning first team all-district selection defensive end Kenneth Alfonso (46 tackles and seven sacks) and fellow defensive end Victor Okeke. Behind them, the Hastings coaching staff believes linebacker David Umah (61 tackles, 13 TFLs) is one of the best at his position in the Houston area.

The Bears haven’t had a winning season or a playoff berth since 2018. Third-year head coach Michael Carter is looking to turn this program around, and he’ll expect them to be more competitive in District 20-6A this fall with a strong core of returners on both sides of the ball.
