On Thursday night the Monterey Plainsmen found themselves in a win or go home situation for the playoffs as they took on the Amarillo Sandies.
Monterey quarterback Luke Arrington completed 9 of 22 passes for 209 yards and threw for 2 touchdowns, while rushing for 13 yards. Arrington connected with receivers Kash Lewis 3 times for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Sebastian Alvarez, who caught 3 passes for 47 yards. While they had success through the air, the Plainsmen also moved the ball on the ground as Darron Moore rushed for 138 yards on 8 carries scoring twice, and Jamarcus Smith rushed for 42 yards on 12 touches.
Despite Monterey’s resilience, the Amarillo defense had an outstanding night as they picked off Arrington 4 times and shut the Plainsmen out until the second quarter. The Sandies offense also started off hot and never slowed down as they knocked the Plainsmen out of playoff contention.
Amarillo defeated Monterey 61-28.
Despite being knocked out of the playoffs, the Plainsmen turned themselves around this year after going 0-10 last season, and there’s no doubt that they will carry this season’s success into next year. Amarillo will start the playoffs on the road, as they will travel to El Paso to take on 8-2 Bel Air at Bel Air stadium.
