Area Round 2A Team of the Week: Honey Grove
2A Team of the Week: Honey Grove Warriors
Honey Grove first grabbed headlines when it shut out the first five opponents it faced this season. The Warriors were hoping to remain in the spotlight this past week as they faced a tough 9-2 Centerville team in the area round.
It was a back-and-forth game throughout as neither team ever led by more than one score.
But with just over five minutes to go, Honey Grove running back Ryelan Morris had his signature moment. He took a direct snap, weaved through the Centerville defense, and scored a 45-yard touchdown that would end up being the difference in the game as Honey Grove won 40-36 (see touchdown below).
Morris had a monster night as he rushed for 244 yards and six touchdowns. His brother Deon also pitched in with 73 yards on 10 carries.
And Ryelan’s impact wasn’t just felt offensively. He had two interceptions defensively as well. Junior linebacker Levi Beavers also left his mark on the game finishing with 20 total tackles.
With the win, Honey Grove heads to the third round of playoffs for the first time since 1970. However, the Warriors will face their toughest test of the year as they will battle #1 Timpson in Athens on Friday.
