2A Team of the Week: Overton Mustangs
Mart had made it to the state championship six of the last seven years. The lone year it didn’t? The Panthers fell in the state semifinals.
Overton, meanwhile, hadn’t made it past the second round in 29 years.
In the end, the future of those streaks came down to the leg of Overton kicker freshman Jackson Furlow. With 10 seconds left, he kept his nerve and hit a 24-yard field goal to boost the Mustangs to a memorable 31-30 win over the Panthers.

Furlow will get his name in the headlines, but Overton senior quarterback Bryce Still also deserves a lot of praise. He threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for another 78 yards and two scores on the ground. Bryson Bobbitt was his go-to receiver with seven catches for 111 yards. Sophomore Jacob Osburn also pitched in with two catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, sophomores Gabriel Miller and Justin Weir led the way with 13 and 12 total tackles respectively. Still, continuing his all-around standout performance, also had an interception on that side of the ball.
The last time Overton won a second round playoff game back in 1995, the Mustangs made a run all the way to the state semifinals. They’ll look to repeat that feat this year starting with their regional semifinal showdown against Grapeland this Friday at 6:00 in Athens.
