Edinburg Vela scored on its first offensive play against Veterans Memorial on Friday.
But despite being 17-point underdogs, the Eagles shut the Sabercats down after that.
Offensively for the Eagles, Elijah Durrette completed touchdowns of 17 and 45 yards to Alejandro Guerrero to give Veterans Memorial a 14-7 halftime lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

However, the star of the show was Veterans Memorial’s defense. The Eagles restricted the Sabercats to just 179 yards of offense after their first big play, while Durrette finished with 228 yards passing.

Next up for Veterans Memorial will be a trip down south on Friday to take on McAllen at its home stadium. A win would send the Eagles to the regional finals for the fourth-straight season
