5A Team of the Week: Baytown Lee Ganders
Baytown Lee was coming off two heavy defeats by a combined 65 points heading into its showdown against undefeated Port Arthur Memorial last Friday.
With the teams trending in opposition directions, Port Arthur Memorial, the number five team in 5A Division I, was a 16-point favorite heading into the contest.
It seemed like the game was heading towards the expected result with Memorial up 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter.
But with six minutes to go, Gander quarterback Levay Duncan found his junior fullback Josh Marquez in the flat for a five-yard score.
The Ganders kept rolling on their next possession as they drove 75 yards down the field. With just a minute to go, Duncan finished the drive off as he connected with Devante Broussard on a slant route for an eight-yard score.
That score ended up being the game-winning one for the Ganders as they held on for a noteworthy 28-24 victory.
The Ganders currently sit at 2-4 in District 8-5A Division I. They’ll look to get back to .500 in district play by the end of the season starting with a road trip to Porter this Friday before their season finale at home against Baytown Sterling on Nov. 4.
