Under the bright lights of Crusader Stadium at UMHB, the Argyle Eagles and La Grange Leopards faced off in what was a lopsided matchup. Argyle students donated $5,000 to the community of La Grange before the game started to help with the relief of Hurricane Harvey, but the Eagles were all business after that.
Argyle was explosive on offense to start the first quarter scoring often on pass plays. The Eagles were able to spread the field against the La Grange defense and used tempo in their advantage. Argyle QB Jon Copeland connected with WR Wes McCollum on a 5yd screen pass to put the Eagles on the board first, with 7:57 left in the 1st quarter. Copeland was only getting started at that point, with 4:42 left in the 1st quarter he found WR Alex Gonzales on a 9 yard touchdown pass. The touchdown drive was set up by a Don Williams 54 yard run, that put Argyle on the 9 yard line. Once again Copeland was able throw a touchdown pass, when he hit WR Cale Nanny on a 30yd corner fade, bringing the first quarter score to 21-0. Jon Copeland finished the first quarter 14-20, 210 yards, 3 touchdowns. La Grange didn’t get much production on offense during the first quarter. The Leopards were only able to obtain 58 total yards and didn’t complete a pass.
The second quarter was almost a carbon copy as the first, with Argyle QB Jon Copeland putting on a clinic against the La Grange defense. Copeland was able to find WR Cole Nanny for another touchdown pass, this time on a 4th down conversion for 33 yards. The Eagles RB Don Williams took a pitch 10 yards to the end zone with 9:30 in the second quarter, bringing the Argyle lead to 35-0. At the 4:24 mark, Copeland threw his 5th touchdown of the night to WR Wes McCollum for 77 yards on a go route, giving Argyle a 42-0 lead.
The Eagles didn’t let up in the second half as Copeland was done for the night. Hayden Clearman and Michael Ryon took turns at QB for the remainder of the game for Argyle. The Eagles scored with 9:40 in the third quarter a 7 yard pass from Clearman to McCollum, making the score 48-0 Argyle. The Eagles then took to the run game, where Don Williams took it in for a 2 yard touchdown, increasing the lead 56-0. Argyle fed the ball to RB Noah Lang who scored the final two touchdowns of the night on runs of 32 and 53 yards.
Argyle dominated in all phases of the game and finished with 565 total yards on offense, with 22 first downs, 356 passing yards, and 209 rushing yards. La Grange finished the game with 103 total yards, 6 first downs, 63 passing yards, and 40 rushing yards. Argyle will face a tough upcoming schedule when they meet Celina and Abilene Wylie, La Grange plays La Vernia next week.
