In an impressive playoff performance, the Axtell Longhorns secured a 35-13 victory over the previously undefeated Mildred Eagles on Friday at Robinson’s Rocket Field. The win marks a historic milestone for Axtell, advancing them to the fourth round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Longhorns will now face Hamilton, an undefeated powerhouse, in the regional final.
First-Half Domination
Axtell opened strong with a 75-yard rushing touchdown from Coldyn Horn in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game. Mildred responded with a touchdown but missed the extra point after a blocked field goal by Axtell’s Jimmy Lawson, keeping the Longhorns ahead 7-6.
In the second quarter, the Longhorns capitalized on a Mildred fumble, and Horn added his second touchdown with a four-yard rush. He followed that with a 10-yard score to extend the lead to 21-6. Mildred managed to cut the lead before halftime with a fumbled touchdown recovery in the end zone, making it 21-13 at the break.
Defensive Strength and Second-Half Control
Mildred opened the second half with a promising drive but was stopped short when Axtell blocked another field goal attempt. The Longhorns’ defense tightened up, highlighted by interceptions from Korbin Tucker and Kelby Hollingsworth. These critical turnovers kept Mildred off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
Horn Seals the Game
Horn powered in for a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, his fourth of the game, securing the Longhorns’ lead. A late touchdown pass from Levi Leathers to Ethan Porter added to the score, putting the game out of reach at 35-13.
Looking Ahead
With their fifth consecutive win, Axtell now holds a 12-1 record. They will face undefeated Hamilton in the regional final on Friday at 7 p.m. This showdown will test Axtell’s resilience as they aim to extend their historic playoff run.
