Big Spring football coach Cannon McWilliams took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to detail a University Interscholastic League (UIL) conference call with hints that we may get news on the ongoing debate about COVID-19 and the 2020 athletics season as early as Monday, July 20.
According to coach McWilliams, the UIL will “most likely” come out with a statement on Monday regarding the beginning of sports as well as guidelines for carrying out the seasons. Allegedly, the UIL representative will be on conference calls today with the office of Governor Greg Abbott.
With schools districts across the state already calling for delayed entries, virtual starts, and no on-campus instruction (including sports instruction), we can only guess at what the UIL may push out and whether it will affect students’ ability to play sports in the fall— especially after the UIL gave eligibility to play sports to remote learners last week.
As rumor stands, September was a month that was thrown around a lot in the conversation on the conference call. As with all coronavirus news, this is still a developing story and will be updated as it changes.
