Anything can happen on Friday night. The Bowie Volunteers proved this was the case with a 12-10 victory over Arlington Martin ending the Warriors’ 16-game district win streak. The Volunteers showed up to Maverick Stadium poised for victory with a 3-0 record to start the season. This was a huge hurdle in Bowie’s pursuit of the post-season, as they hadn’t beat Martin since 2012.
Bowie’s Donoven Davenport lead the offense completing a 26-yard pass to Kobe Daniels for the team’s first touchdown and an 88-yard completion to Braydon Johnson early in the second half for the game’s decisive sore. Bowie’s defense, led by coach Lloyd Bryant, held Martin’s traditionally high-powered offense to 187 total yards.
While the fourth quarter was scoreless for both teams, it was not without action.
Late in the game, Bowie threw an interception in the endzone. Momentum quickly shifted in Martin’s favor as they march downfield until they fumbled in field goal range, sacrificing a last-minute opportunity to take the lead.
Martin continues to struggle and remains winless following their season opening win over Dallas Skyline. The Warriors have fallen prey to Southlake Carroll and South Grand Prairie in a tough preseason schedule. The team has scored less in their last three games combined than they did in their first game. This is uncharacteristic for an offense that normally dominates the district. Adjustments will certainly need to be made if the squad intends to make a playoff run.
Keep Bowie on your radar. The impressive win over Martin marks the team’s first 4-0 start since 2008. They are certainly making a case as the leader of the newly organized District 4-6A which includes incredible programs like Mansfield and Lamar.
Martin will meet Fort Worth Paschal Thursday at Farrington Field. Bowie will play Sam Houston at Wilemon Field Friday, September 30.
