Hours after losing his father, Millsap junior running back Braun Johnson delivered an extraordinary performance, rushing for 326 yards and six touchdowns in a 63-0 victory over Eastland on Friday, October 23.

His father, Millsap head coach Jacob “Jake” Johnson, died that morning at age 45 following a three-year battle with leukemia.

At the Johnson family’s request, the Bulldogs played their scheduled district game. Braun carried the ball just 14 times, averaging 23.3 yards per carry.

The evening became a community tribute. Fans wore orange to recognize leukemia awareness, while players wore orange socks and armbands. Following one touchdown, Braun pointed toward the sky.

Jake Johnson had led Millsap’s football program since 2015. He helped end an eight-year playoff drought in 2018 and guided the school to its first postseason victory since 1999.

Despite intensive cancer treatments, Johnson returned to coaching this season before his illness forced him back into the hospital.

During his treatment, father and son spoke daily, encouraging each other through their workouts. Jake had coached Braun and several of his teammates since kindergarten. That history gave the night added meaning for players who grew up under his guidance, both on and off the field.

Millsap improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in district play. Braun now has 2,161 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns this season.

The Bulldogs visit Hamilton on Friday. Johnson’s funeral service is scheduled for Sunday at Millsap High School Stadium.
