Brenham and College Station’s A&M Consolidated haven’t played each other in 21 years. The two schools are separated by about 25 minutes as the crow flies, but by 45 minutes in the back roads of getting from one school to another.
The Brenham Cubs and Consolidated Tigers will finally meet on the gridiron for the first time since 1995. The two will meet in the 5A Area Round this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Prairie View University’s new stadium.
The two Brazos Valley schools have had little in common other than playing in the same peewee and junior high leagues. Because after that, the schools might as well be on separate ends of the earth.
Scuttlebutt around the Brazos Valley says legendary Brenham coach Glen West could finally retire at the end of this season, whenever that may be. Other rumors include Consol’s David Raffield could be moving on after 2016 as well.
There’s one available coach in the Brazos Valley who’d certainly be atop the Christmas wish list if either of those rumors play out — Lee Fedora.
Fedora abruptly resigned from Navasota last spring after guiding the Rattlers to a 65-5 record over the last five seasons with a pair of undefeated state championships in 2012 and 2014.
The Navasota ISD Board of Trustees failed to make a second on a motion to extend Fedora’s contract through next year. After public outrage, the Board reconvened two weeks later and passed his extension with no opposition. But the public humiliation had already been done, and Fedora tendered his resignation.
Fedora, who graduated from A&M Consolidated and got his first assistant coaching job at his alma mater, turned down the chance to become the head coach there (when Consolidated was in the top classification of 5A) to stay at then-3A Navasota. He also turned down a chance to coach at then-5A Temple.
Fedora has stayed out of coaching during the 2016 season, but has been spotted at random Brazos Valley games. He still lives in College Station and could be the next guy at either Brenham or Consol. Then again, should his brother [UNC head coach Larry Fedora] land at Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M or LSU, then little brother Lee would be a bright up-and-comer for offensive coordinator.
Will Fedora be at Friday’s potential Fedora Bowl? If not for any future job, it could be a chance to just see an old rivalry renewed with something meaningful on the line.
