Buda Johnson Key Players and Storylines

After a regional semifinal run in 2024, Buda Johnson crashed back down to earth a year ago, missing the playoffs entirely. Sam Carlin and company expect that to just be a blip on the radar.

11 starters return this season, and the Jaguars have the potential to be much better as they slide back to District 26-6A.

Quarterback Jonah Montgomery (670 passing yards, 196 rushing yards) can keep defenses on their toes with his dual threat ability while receiver Devan Brown (182 receiving yards) is dynamic both in the passing game and in special teams. Up front, center Zach Antoine is the glue guy as a three-year letterman.

Defensively, Carlin believes this could be the best defensive line and secondary in Johnson’s seven-year varsity history. 6’1″, 215-pound defensive end Payton Wolfe and defensive tackle Clayton Vinson (39 tackles, four TFLs) have the size, speed, and strength to cause problems in the trenches. Behind them, senior safety Jordan Steward (71 tackles) is both a sure tackler and “the most dynamic kid in the program.” He also could play some running back as needed this fall.

Johnson does have a big hole to fill in the middle of its defense after graduating a three-year starter at linebacker, but a talented senior class is more than ready to lead the way and fill in any gaps. Last year left a bad taste in Johnson’s mouth. Expect the Jaguars to be back in the playoff mix this fall.
