Can Clear Springs Shock Katy?

[poll id=”5″]

The Katy Tigers are big favorites in their opening game tonight vs the Clear Springs Chargers.  Though with all the challenges teams have faced with COVID-19, we do expect to see a lot of upsets this season.  Could we see one in Week 1?

Max Preps had Katy as the #8 team in the nation a few weeks ago and currently has them as the 5th best team in Texas. DC Football has them ranked at #3 in Texas.  They are led by a third-year starter at Quarterback, Bronson McClelland.  McClelland had 1,698 passing yards, 20 TDs passing; 167rushing  yards, 5 TDs rushing last year for the 12-1 Tigers.  He is 23-3 in his three years for Katy.  However, much of his supporting cast graduated last year.  Helping him out will be what could be one of the best defenses in the state, led by linebackers Shepherd Bowling and Ty Kana.  Katy has a strong chance of winning a state title this year.

You won’t find Clear Springs in any of the preseason statewide rankings, but they’ve quietly produced back to back over .500 seasons and won a district title last year.  They look to improve on last year’s 6-5 season under 5th year Head Coach, Jason Nelms.  The Chargers can put up points.  Starting Quarterback Garrett Rooker threw for 24 touchdowns last year.  Rooker is joined by returning start wide-receiver Isaiah Bibb, who looks to go over 1,000 receiving yards this year and improve on his 8 touchdowns from last year.  The key for the Chargers will be their defense. They are young on the defensive side of the ball, but with their offense, if the defense can be solid, the Chargers could be in for a good season and might be able to hang with Katy in week one.
