Can North Shore Three-Peat in 6A Division I?

By Carl Theiss

The last two seasons the Mustangs have taken down Duncanville in the Championship at AT&T Stadium.

Head Coach Jon Kay, who has led the Mustangs to 3 state championships in 5 years, including the overtime win over Westlake in 2015, has reloaded again.

They enter the playoffs at 10-0 and again went undefeated in 21-6A play.   Many publications and the media tabbed 21-6A as the best football district in Texas, as 6 of the 7 teams went to the state playoffs in 2019.

Kay and his coaching staff have put together what many in the Media believe is the best offensive units in North Shore school history. Returning starters QB Dematrius Davis,  WR Shad Banks and OL Jaeden Roberts lead the way.

The Mustangs have scored 506 points this year, and scored at least 47 in every district contest.  Davis, the 2-time offensive MVP in the state championship games, has completed 76% of his passes for 2,472 yards and 27 TD’s and has only thrown one interception.

With only 3 returning starters on defense, they had to grow up fast as the Mustangs faced 4 teams in non-district that have punched their playoff tickets for this season, including 5A state champs Shadow Creek.

DB Denver Harris, the top junior DB in Texas, has paced the defense with 6 interceptions on the year.

LB’s Kent Battle and Darius Clark keep getting better each week.  Their defense has only allowed 140 points, with much of that coming against the second and third-team players.

The Mustangs have not had many injuries this year and are battle-tested.   They are used to playing games in December.  With the season delayed because of COVID,  they hope to be playing in another state title game on January 16, 2021.

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and enjoys the playoffs.  The best time of the year!
