Channelview Key Players and Storylines
It’s a new era at Channelview. After 20 seasons in charge, Averion Hurts retired over the offseason.
In his place comes veteran coach Clarence McKinney. He will serve as the interim head coach for the Falcons in 2026. He’ll bring Division I experience after leading Texas Southern from from 2019 to 2023.
He inherits quite the challenge with Channelview playing in one of the toughest 6A districts in the entire state. Just last year, North Shore won the 6A Division I state title and C.E. King was the 6A Division II runner-up.
That tough schedule was part of the reason for Channelview’s 1-9 record last year, but the Falcons also let a couple of games slip away. They had three losses by 11 points or less.
This year, McKinney will have to emphasize the Falcons’ need to finish games the same way they start them.
The good news is the Falcons should be able to fly offensively. Big-play receiver Davion Vanderbilt is a legit Power Four prospect, while fellow receiver Patricio Martinez is another reliable target with his “great hands.”

The Falcons had two different underclassmen quarterbacks see action last year. Whoever earns the starting role will have the benefit of playing behind three-year starter center Christian Azua.
Defensively, Channelview graduated its five leading tacklers from last season, so several players are going to be asked to take on bigger roles. Linebacker Joshua Carreon needs to “call the defense” and lanky 6’0” cornerback Robert Robinson will look to “make big strides in the secondary.” Senior defensive end Dave Rodriguez provides leadership in the trenches with his discipline.
Channelview may lack some experience, but the Falcons have no shortage of motivation. After back-to-back one win seasons, they are desperate to improve their record in 2026.
