Chaps Stay Unbeaten, Defangs Rattlers
Despite both teams coming into the UIL Class 6A Division I contest undefeated, Westlake gave Reagan little respect to their record, triumphing over the Rattlers 45-28.
By halftime, the Chaparrals seemingly had the contest decided, scoring 28 straight unanswered points and flirting with 300 yards of total offense. Westlake saw that lead extend to 31-7 by the end of the second period, emphasized by rushing scores by Jack Kayser, Grady Bartlett, and Rees Wise; additionally, receiver Brody Wilhelm caught a 26-yard touchdown. In total, Westlake scored on their first five consecutive possessions.
Reagan put up more of an effort in the second half, getting numbers on the board in their opening drive with a 16-yard touchdown to receiver Michael Yzuguirre for his second touchdown of the contest. After Westlake’s offense went nowhere, Reagan got the ball back to potentially narrow the score. Instead, quarterback Brad Jackson threw an interception to Denim Collins at Reagan’s 32-yard line— a turnover that was quickly converted into another Kayser rushing score.
In total, Kayser scored three times on the ground, scrambling for 170 yards. Additionally, Wise passed for 212 yards.
If Westlake defeats the winner of San Benito-Laredo United on Saturday, and Lake Travis wins against San Antonio Brennan, both Austin squads will be scheduled for a fourth round confrontation.
Earlier this year, the Chaps defeated the Cavaliers 20-14—their closest game of the season.
