Conroe Key Players and Storylines

Conroe found itself right in the middle of District 13-6A a year ago. Three of its four district wins were by 14 points or more. Three of its four district losses were by 21 points or more. Not a single district game the Tigers played in was decided by just one possession.

The result was the Tigers missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They’ll be out to rectify that this year.

Quarterback Cameron Nunley (1,548 passing yards and 12 touchdowns) will lead the way again offensively after starting all ten games last season. He’ll need some help though at the skill positions. His top two backs and three leading receivers all graduated. The addition of receiver/defensive back Keino Hopkins will be a welcome one. He was 14-6A’s All-Purpose Player of the Year at Dekaney a year ago.

Conroe will be strong in the trenches, literally. 6’4″, 305-pound offensive lineman Kingston Tupuola brings plenty of power to the offensive line. Defensively, the Tigers will have both defensive end Alexander Coey (26 tackles, 15 TFLs), a Power Four prospect, coming off the edge and fellow defensive lineman Denzel Haynes (35 tackles, 9.5 TFLs) wreaking havoc in the interior.

At the second level, the Tigers’ coaching staff is excited about the athleticism Chris Gardner will bring to the linebacking corps.

Conroe will need to sort out the secondary after being hit hard by graduation, but head coach Cedric Hardeman is excited about the potential this year’s group has.

He has been preaching the importance of being the more physical team every Friday night as the Tigers look to make an instant return to the playoffs in 2026.
