Converse Judson uses late-game surge to launch past Cibolo Steele first time in program history

CONVERSE, Texas — It seemed like Cibolo Steele High was assured their fourth loss of the season after trailing Converse Judson’s Rockets 35-7 heading into the fourth quarter of Friday night’s game at DW Rutledge Stadium.

A third-quarter stretch that saw two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Julon Williams, though, left most of Cibolo Steele fans filing down the bleachers and the Knights suffering from a hangover of last year’s state championship bid.

The fourth quarter was a different story: a Tylee Tyson rushing touchdown sparked a comeback highlighted by a 20-yard reception by Kenney Broadnax and a retrieved onside kick that resulted in an 18-yard Caden Sterns grab.

The Rockets, on the verge of a late-game rally, were forced into a fourth down conversion but snuck through the line for extra yardage and force the game clock to expire. They won the slugfest 35-28.

The No. 1 team in San Antonio improved to 5-0 behind quarterback Williams’ 289 yards and four touchdowns. The Rockets accounted for 412 yards of offense in comparison to the Knights’ 338. The eighth try against their district rival was their first ever win in the series — a statement victory that may give Judson a boost in both national and state rankings.

Steele sunk to 0-2 in district play but could be the best team in Texas that holds only one victory. Their remaining schedule pits them against lesser competition until a final bout against Clemens to close the year — a likely run for playoff seeding.
