Cypress Creek Key Players and Storylines

Cypress Creek heads into year three under Deveon McKinney with plenty of playmakers, but the question is will they have the might up front?

The Cougars sent five linemen from last year’s team to the college level, so there’s some rebuilding to do in the trenches. Early on, expect them to lean on 6’2”, 300-pound senior Bradyn Bloom and 6’4”, 270-pound junior tackle Jeremiah Stewart, who are both returning lettermen. 

Behind them, quarterback Kyle Moss returns after throwing for 1,243 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. He’ll be living a quarterback’s dream with the weapons he has around him. Tight end Tre’Mayne Cartwright “loves to block” and can also win one-on-one matchups in the passing game (186 receiving yards and two touchdowns). Receiver Tyson Brooks (159 receiving yards) is a vertical threat, junior receiver Taven Oluwa (305 receiving yards) knows how to find creases in the defense, and running back Jaidan Perez (393 rushing yards and five touchdowns) is a shifty option both in the run game and passing attack.

Defensively, the Cougars have just three returning starters, so inexperience is a concern but not in the middle of the field. Linebacker Parker Osborne (30 tackles) “will be a huge presence on the inside” and will form a formidable tandem with talented junior linebacker Carson Collins (37 tackles). Up front, defensive end Dyllon Harris (17 tackles, seven TFLs) will be a player offensive lines have to be aware of at all times.

Cypress Creek finished just a game out of the playoffs last year, but all four of its district losses were by 20 points or more. They’ll need players to step up in the trenches quickly if they want to close that gap and give themselves a shot at snapping a five-year playoff drought.
