Cypress Ranch Key Players and Storylines

Cypress Ranch reached the third round of playoffs for the first time since its 2014 state runner-up finish a year ago. The Mustangs very nearly had more in the tank. They fell to Waxahachie in overtime in that regional semifinal matchup. Their two losses in the regular season were also nail-biters, coming by a combined six points.

This team has all the pieces to compete for another district title as they move into District 23-6A, their first time in Region III since 2017. Their 6’5″ quarterback Braden Baker (2,806 passing yards and 32 touchdowns), a Houston commit, is back at the helm, and he has some dangerous weapons at his disposal. North Texas commit Manny Leyja (885 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns) was his go-to target a year ago, while speedy senior Derrick McCullar (422 receiving yards and five touchdowns) is a huge threat out of the slot and as a returner on special teams.

Expect three-star running back Khristian White (366 rushing yards and eight touchdowns) to take on a bigger role this year. He’ll be able to run behind returning second team all-district center Brayden Crawford and four-star junior tackle R’Monie Edwards.

Defensively, the Mustangs are just as stacked. The secondary will be their strong suit. Cornerback Jacob Lee (47 tackles) is a multi-sport standout, and safeties Caleb Clack (51 tackles) and David Crosby (53 tackles) are two of Cypress Ranch’s leading returning tacklers. Up front, tenacious 6’4″, 300-pound defensive tackle Amari Vickerson (48 tackles, 10.5 TFLs) will be a handful for opposing offensive lines.

The Mustangs certainly have momentum after last season, and they return almost all of their key players. Expect them to be in the mix for the Region III title in 2026.
