Cypress Springs Key Players and Storylines
Cypress Springs made the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time ever in 2023 and 2024. Last year, they had another strong season, finishing 6-4, but they ended up one game out of the playoff spots in District 16-6A.
This year, they slide into Region III for the first time since 2017. They’ll play in 23-6A alongside three of their fellow CFISD schools, the Lamar Consolidated ISD schools, and Waller.
They did lose do-it-all star Paris Melvin Jr., who will play at the University of Houston this fall, but the cupboard is far from bare. They’ll have two capable options at quarterback with versatile junior Myles Hamilton (1,275 passing yards and 15 touchdowns) and senior Jared Hagger. Explosive senior Yogi Martin (609 rushing yards and ten touchdowns) will step into the starting running back role. His burst has been evident on Cypress Springs’ two-time state-medaling 4X100 team on the track. 6’3″ senior receiver Connor Patrick will aim to make a jump this fall after the Panthers graduated their four-leading pass catchers from last year.

Defensively, the Panthers did graduate all of their all-district honorees in the front seven, but the secondary can hold its own against anyone. Four-star cornerback Kameron Roberson (16 tackles) is the player to know, while Rernard Walker (54 tackles) is a sure tackler from his safety position.
Before Oji Fagan took over, Cypress Springs had had just two winning seasons in its program history. Now, the Panthers have finished above .500 each of the past three seasons. They do have some holes to fill, but the talent and culture are there for the Panthers to compete for a playoff berth again this fall.
