DeSoto Opens Season With Win At Nike Classic

The DeSoto Eagles traveled to Oregon to play in the Nike Classic. They faced the Purple Knights of St. Augustine from New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Eagles traveled to the Nike Kickoff Classic at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon to face the Purple Knights from our neighboring state of Louisiana. The game did not get off to a good start for DeSoto.

On the opening drive, Desoto fumbled, leading to a St. Augustine touchdown on that drive and a 7-0 lead.  However, a minute later, DJ Bailey connected with wide receiver Johntay Cook II for a 69-yard touchdown to tie the game. The score remained 7-7 going into the third quater.

The Purple Knights struck twice in the second half with a field goal to take a 10-7 lead. Then, the Eagles offense got rolling. DeSoto scored touchdowns on the next four drives, blowing the game open with a 35-10 lead. That would be the final score as the DeSoto defense shut St. Augustine down in the 4th quarter.

DeSoto is expected to have a high-powered offense, and they proved it in the second half. While they loved the ball in the first half, a missed field goal, a turnover, and a big sack ended three promising drives. In the second half, the ground game got going. In the 4 scoring drives alone, DeSoto ran for over 200 hards, including rushing touchdowns from both Jaden Trawick and Tre Wisner.

The Eagles face St. Frances Academy from Baltimore, Maryland. That game is in Clark Stadium in Ft. Worth. Then, they face the Class 5A Division 2 State Champions, South Oak Cliff. If DeSoto can start the season 3-0, look to see them climbing way up the 6A State Rankings.
