DIMMIT, Texas — As reported by KCBD-TV in Lubbock, Dimmitt head coach Steve Gunter was hospitalized after a possible stroke suffered in the early morning hours of September 18. Though the community had requested prayers for the coach, he is was released from Covenant Hospital in Lubbock last Thursday, and is now undergoing rehabilitation according to Dimmitt ISD superintendent Bryan Davis.
The 2017 season is Gunter’s seventh at the helm in Dimmitt. Last season the former Munday, Hawley, and Sudan High School head coach led the Bobcats to their first playoff appearance since 1976, a ending a nearly 40-year postseason drought.
Defensive coordinator Charles Poling assumed interim head coaching duties in the meantime.
“I’ve been pretty surprised at the community outreach,” said Poling. “We have T-shirts that we can’t take enough orders on. We have our first home game since it happened, looks like our whole crowd is sold out. We have a bunch of other area schools buying shirts.”
“We have our eighth-grade game up in Boys Ranch, which is about an hour away. I was just calling to get meals set up for the kids, and the manager at the Dairy Queen asked how Coach Gunter was doing,” recalled Poling.
Dimmitt continues to seek their first win of the season, playing host to Boys Ranch this Friday.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the Gunter family to assist with medical expenses. If you wish to donate to We Stand With Gunter, here is the link.
