DJ Lagway Leads Willis to Historic Playoff Win
DJ Lagway Nears All-Time Record In Victory Over Tomball Memorial
Five touchdowns for the five-star Florida commit.
As he has done all season, DJ Lagway excelled, pushing Willis’ undefeated streak to at least another week, defeating Tomball Memorial 42-21 in a Region II-6A Division II area round match at Randall Reed Stadium. It’s the team’s first trip to the regional semifinals for the team since 1994, as well as the program’s best record in over 60 years.
So far, Lagway is responsible for over 3,800 passing yards and 56 touchdowns on a 75% completion rate; he is one touchdown shy of the Class 6A state record set by Garland’s Sergio Perez in 2021. A third of those yards have gone to sophomore cornerback Jermaine Bishop, who scored a trio of touchdowns Friday night.
Despite blocking a 47-yard field goal attempt in Willis’ opening drive, Tomball Memorial’s defense struggled, allowing Lagway and crew to build a 21-0 halftime lead, capped by Bishop’s 65-yard touchdown. After Willis scored their 28th unanswered points, Tomball Memorial responded with three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. However, Willis continued responding offensively, keeping the game just out of Tomball Memorial’s reach.
The Wildkats are now 2-1 all-time against Tomball Memorial. It’s Willis’s first District 13-6A title since 2002.
On Friday, Willis will advance to the regional semifinals against Texas high school powerhouse DeSoto. The Eagles, the defending 6A Division II state champions, defeated Wylie East in their previous contest.
