Eagle Pass Key Players and Storylines
Roger Olivas didn’t have the debut he wanted as Eagle Pass’ head coach in 2024, when the Eagles missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. They rectified that last season with a solid 6-4 campaign and a third place district finish.
Now, he and his players are turning their attention to trying to bring home Eagle Pass’ first playoff win since 2021.
Any success offensively will begin behind an offensive line led by three-year starters Jayden Garcia and Gerardo Alvarez.Running back Avery Embry (336 rushing yards and five touchdowns) is ready to step up and lead the backfield with his “breakaway speed” after Eagle Pass’ leading rusher and starting quarterback both graduated.Out at receiver, junior Jeremiah Silva (398 receiving yards and six touchdowns) is poised to shine too after earning the district’s Newcomer of the Year award in 2025.
Defensively, linebackers Alex Ruiz (85 tackles, two sacks) and Alex Mallen (50 tackles, three forced fumbles) will need to replicate their 2025 seasons in what will be an otherwise inexperienced linebacking corps.Defensive end Arturo Hernandez (10 TFLs, five sacks) is a major threat off the edge, while cornerback Tristian Villasenor has great instincts going up against some of the district’s top receivers.
Despite only four returning starters on each side of the ball, Olivas believes this year’s team has just as much talent as last year’s. He said this group has been improving at all positions after a great offseason, a must if Eagle Pass is to break through with that elusive postseason victory.
