Eagles’ Defense Soars to 5-6A Title Victory
Prosper has been prosperous this season.
The future home team to likely the most expensive stadium in Texas high school football defeated McKinney 24-12 last Thursday, remaining perfect in district play.
Because of their efforts, the Eagles were honored with the District 5-6A title, their first ever competing in Class 6A.
Prosper was led by a restrictive defensive unit, holding USC commit running back Bryan Jackson to a mere 54 yards. In context, Jackson rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns the previous week against Denton Guyer. The defense also forced two interceptions in the first half, including a Trevor Ellis interception on a pass near the team’s own 10-yard line. The tone was set in the first quarter, when Laird Hanson-Felter swatted the ball. The Eagles took over with solid field position close to the Lions’ 35.
Compared to Jackson’s uninspired effort, Prosper running back Leo Anguiano had 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a 67-yard sprinting score late in the second. Receiver Khristian Mackintrush contributed an additional 135 yards and two touchdowns.
By halftime, Prosper had built a 17-0 advantage, and saw their lead increase to 24-0 by the mid third period..
Prosper will play Plano East (6-4) in the first round of the playoffs. The postseason berth comes on the heels of last year’s third round loss against Southlake Carroll, falling in the state semifinals.
Fellow 5-6A squad making the playoffs include Allen (#2 seed) in Division I; McKinney and Denton Guyer are the #1-#2 seeds in Division II.
