The fan vote team of the year poll turned into a battle!
As is the case with most of the fan vote polls, two teams pulled ahead early and battled it out. A few weeks ago, it was Ashton Garner and the Dayton fans battling Austin Novosad and the Dripping Springs fans in the 5A Fan Vote Player of the Year, where Garner had a come from behind win.
Then, it was Alex Trevino and the Lubbock Roosevelt fans getting over 200k votes to beat Ryan Harris and the Beckville fans for the 2021 TXHSFB Fan Vote Player of the Year. Harris, finishing second, totaled the second highest votes in any poll at 192k.
And, this poll was no different. The Franklin and South Oak Cliff fans, who are routinely two of the most engaged online fan bases, voted in high volume. In the end, it was South Oak Cliff with 91k votes and the win. Second was Franklin, followed by Katy Paetow, Westbrook, and China Spring.
Notice, the smaller towns beat out the big-school teams like Westlake and North Shore. Never underestimate the football spirit of the smaller schools in Texas.
South Oak Cliff
South Oak Cliff, coached by Jason Todd, knocked off Liberty Hill 23-14 in the 5A Division II State Title Game, the Golden Bears became the first Dallas ISD school to win a state title since 1958. They finished the season 15-1, with their one loss being to Duncanville, 42-27, which was a very respectable showing against the eventual 6A D1 finalist and nationally ranked Panthers.
