As Geno Smith has proven, it’s never too late in a player’s career to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

UT Longhorns legend and Jim Ned graduate proved that point on Sunday when the Arizona Cardinals took down the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Ram.

In place of the injured Kyler Murray — a TXHSFB standout himself — Colt McCoy shined for the Cardinal’s offense, completing 26 of 37 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown. The 13-year NFL veteran was ready for his name to be called for the first time this season. Since 2015, the veteran has started a combined 9 contests.

Back in his high school days, he was coached by his father Brad McCoy at Jim Ned High School. A three-year letterman, McCoy posted a 42-2 record as a starter, finishing his prep career as the all-time leading passer in Texas 2A history and sixth overall in Texas high school at the time of his graduation.

With the Longhorns, McCoy competed for five seasons; his 45 victories are the most in NCAA history, bettering Georgia’s David Greene. Additionally, he was the only quarterback in school history to win 10 or more games in four seasons. A year after graduating, his No. 12 jersey was retired at Darryl K. Royal Stadium.

Since Murray may be out for the foreseeable future with a tweaked hamstring, it’s McCoy’s starting job to lose.
