Garrett, a former star at Arlington Martin and later at Texas A&M, had his rookie year start off slow after battling injuries during the preseason and ended up missing the first four games of his rookie year. He ended up becoming a force on the field once he got into the game as he was one of the few bright spots for the 0-16 Browns.
He finished with 31 total tackles on the year, seven sacks, and a forced fumble and recovery in 11 games played this season.
Meanwhile, Jamal Adams made an instant impact for the Jets secondary upon his arrival. The rookie standout from Carrollton Hebron and LSU started and played in every game this season for a team that exceeded expectations despite a 5-11 record.
Adams finished his rookie year with 82 total tackles on the year, six passes defended, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.
There were other Texas connections named to the team as well. Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, former Texas A&M offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor (Baltimore Ravens) and Dallas Cowboys wide receiver/kick returner Ryan Switzer were each selected as well. Running back Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs was named Rookie of the Year.
