Friday night, Walnut Grove entered their second playoff matchup following a dominant win over Seguin. This time, they faced Lubbock-Cooper, fresh off a 38-14 victory over Canutillo, as both teams battled for a spot in the next round of the playoffs.
The game opened with Walnut Grove’s freshman quarterback, Hayes Hackney, connecting with Zaiden Crain for a 47-yard touchdown, giving the team a 7-0 lead. Lubbock-Cooper quickly responded with a rushing touchdown from Chamayne Johnson Jr., tying the game 7-7 by the end of the first quarter. After a missed field goal by Walnut Grove, Lubbock-Cooper capitalized with Ryan Rodriguez throwing a 72-yard touchdown pass to Michael Dever, taking the lead. Walnut Grove added a field goal to close the gap, but Lubbock-Cooper extended their lead to 21-13 before halftime with a Caden Brown rushing touchdown.
Walnut Grove’s offense came out strong in the second half. Hackney threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Crain, cutting the deficit to 21-20. With their defense stepping up and stopping Lubbock-Cooper, Hackney found Luke Watkins for a 40-yard touchdown pass, followed by a successful two-point conversion to take a 28-21 lead. Walnut Grove’s defense continued to dominate, forcing Lubbock-Cooper to settle for two field goals, which extended Walnut Grove’s lead to 34-21.
In the final two minutes, Lubbock-Cooper tried to stage a comeback as Caden Brown connected with Michael Dever for a late touchdown. However, their onside kick attempt failed, allowing Walnut Grove to run out the clock and secure a 34-28 victory.
Next week, Walnut Grove will face Argyle in the third round of the playoffs. Argyle is coming off a narrow 28-21 win over Memorial.
