High School
Freshmen may be Ineligible for Varsity Football
The UIL is meeting this summer, as they do each summer, to consider several changes. The meeting will be on June 14th. CLICK HERE for the full meeting agenda.
One proposal that the UIL is considering that has been getting a lot of attention and has sparked heated opinions on both sides is a proposal to prohibit freshmen from competing in varsity sports.
On the positive side, prohibiting freshmen from playing in varsity sports would create more opportunities for upper-classmen and allow freshmen to develop and learn the sport more without the pressure and more serious competition of varsity sports.
On the negative side, it removes the meritocracy of having the best players, regardless of their class, play, And, this could become an issue for smaller schools that depend on freshmen to fill out their football roster.
