Goldthwaite and De Leon both brought 3-0 records into Friday night. The Eagles had just beaten San Saba 35-17, while the Bearcats were coming off a 42-7 win over Albany.
This time, Goldthwaite’s defense got the headlines. De Leon arrived averaging 46 points and 450 yards per game, but the Eagles held the Bearcats to 13 points and 305 yards in a 24-13 win at Gary Proffitt Stadium. That’s a pretty good way to back up an unbeaten start.
It was 7-7 at halftime, so the Eagles still had plenty of work to do. Goldthwaite took a 10-7 lead into the fourth quarter, then added 14 points in the final period to finish the job.
Goldthwaite is now 4-0 and hosts Winters, which beat Abilene TLCA 36-24. De Leon falls to 3-1 and hosts another unbeaten team in Early, coming off a 21-14 win over Hawley.
