Grand Prairie Offensive Wizard Transferring From UT
Texas running back Savion Red is leaving the Burnt Orange.
After 21 games with the team, the third-year player and Grand Prairie grad plans to enter the transfer portal.
Red rushed for 131 yards on 30 carries with a touchdown last season, primarily in fourth-and-short or goal line situations. His skillset also saw him throw a 25-yard pass on fourth down against Oklahoma last fall. However, as coach Sarkisian shifted away from the Wildcat offense in the back half of the year, Red saw his role significantly diminish.
With Jaydon Blue and CJ Baxter expected to get the bulk of the carries, as well as sophomore Tre Wisner and freshmen recruits Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson vying for playing time, Red saw his value on the depth chart plummet.
A three-time all-district honoree, Red competed at quarterback, running back, and wide receiver Gophers. In 2021, he was named MVP of District 8-6A and first-team all-district. During his senior campaign, his offensive stats were packed: Red completed 70-of-138 passes for 857 yards and seven touchdowns, rushed 157 times for 1,367 yards and 20 touchdowns, and caught 10 passes for 128 yards and a score. His steady output pushed Grand Prairie to the 6A Division 2 area playoffs.
Once Red transfers, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
