After a challenging season, the playoff fate of four teams, Frisco Independence, Frisco Wakeland, Frisco Reedy, and The Colony would come down to a coin toss.
District 5-5A Division 1 made the choice to settle no-contest games (which occurred because of COVID-19) by giving wins based on records against common opponents. The next tie-breaker was point differential (which most districts use as their tie-breaker). Then, if there is still a tie, a coin toss decides.
District 5-5A was dominated this year by Denton Ryan. They are our 8th ranked team in the state (CLICK HERE for the full rankings) and the highest-ranked non 6A team. Finishing second in the district was the Frisco Lone Star Rangers. After starting out 0-2, the Rangers went on a 5 game win streak, which was ended by Denton Ryan on the last game of the season, 21-35. While they were the clear #1 and #2, the battle for the third and fourth spot was back and forth all year and would come down to a coin toss.
Frisco Independence was in a tough spot to make the playoffs. They needed a win and a lot of help. The Knights took care of business the night before by beating Frisco Heritage, 63-27, to move to 4-4 on the season and 4-2 in district play. Then they needed The Colony Cougars to win their game against Frisco Reedy by 17 points or more. That happened. The Cougars won by exactly 17, 31-14. That left four teams tied with 4 district wins. Frisco Wakeland took one of the spots via tiebreakers. To decide the last playoff spot, Frisco Independence Head Coach Kyle Story had to head to The Colony for a coin toss.
Coach Story arrived at The Colony and went into an office with The Colony coaching staff for the coin toss. The coin was tossed…
He called, “tails.”
Tails it was.
This gave the playoff spots to Frisco Independence and Frisco Wakeland. The Colony and Frisco Reedy were out of the playoffs.
