Holmes Key Players and Storylines

There were small but meaningful signs of growth at Holmes last season as the Huskies won multiple games for the first time since 2021. But despite that improvement in the win column, the Huskies’ scoring average dropped six points to just 16.2 points per game.

Head coach Pete Padilla believes that unit will be much more dangerous this year thanks in large part to Jayden Hopkins (607 passing yards, 1,022 rushing yards). He is a four-year starter who can play quarterback, running back, or receiver. If he is behind center, he’ll have plenty of options in the passing game with receiving corps leader Deonta Corley (603 receiving yards and two touchdowns) and fellow junior Michael Coleman (239 receiving yards and two touchdowns).

Both players will go both ways with Corley serving as a reliable tackler in the secondary and Coleman (45 tackles, six TFLs) as a pass-rushing threat from his linebacker position. Fellow linebacker Gabriel Fernandez (47 tackles) is also back after finishing as Holmes’ third-leading tackler in 2025.

Holmes’ biggest question lies in the trenches, where graduation hit the Huskies hard. 6’5” defensive end/offensive tackle Rylee Medel and fellow offensive tackle Anderson Perez will need to take on leadership roles this season.

As much as Holmes is focusing on taking another step forward on the field, Padilla has also been preaching about seeing “relentless effort and discipline” from this year’s group. He’s determined for this group to set the tone “for the next generation of Huskies” as the program looks to build back towards playoff contention.
