Houston Heights Key Players and Storylines
Houston Heights has been a model of consistency with four-straight second place district finishes. However, last year, the Bulldogs failed to win a playoff game for the first time since 2021.
Now, 2026 brings about a new challenge as the Bulldogs and their fellow Houston ISD schools join the Alief ISD and Spring Branch ISD schools in District 20-6A.
Another challenge? The Bulldogs will have to replace their starting quarterback and top two receivers from a year ago. Still, the cupboard is far from bare. Senior receivers Nelson Rodriguez (305 receiving yards and six touchdowns) and Micah Olivier (265 receiving yards and three touchdowns) showed flashes last year that they’re ready for bigger roles, while sophomore receiver Kendell Burges is already attracting Division I attention. The rushing attack should pick up where it left off in 2025 with senior back Phelan Powell (610 rushing yards and four touchdowns) returning.

Up front, center Felix Mora and 6’5″, 285-pound tackle Ayden Bazy will provide a strong foundation after earning first team all-district honors last year.
Defensively, the Bulldogs will be the strongest in the middle of the field with the trio of Domingo Herrera (51 tackles, 6.5 TFLs), Max Robbins (43 tackles, seven TFLs), and Mason Carlton at linebacker. On the back end, quarterbacks will have a tough time getting over the top of senior safety/cornerback Ashton Davis (39 tackles and one INT).
A year ago, Stratford sent the Bulldogs home in the opening round of the playoffs. Now, they will face each other in district play this year. It’s a testament to how tough District 20-6A will be. The Bulldogs have the skill talent, but they’ll need to settle in a new quarterback quick as they look to compete for one of the top spots in district play.
