Instant Analysis: Dallas Cowboys 31, Green Bay Packers 34

Jeff Heath needs to be lauded for his performance today.

Heath made the play that will be ultimately forgotten in all the limelight given to Zeke, Dak, and Dez. His diving interception of Aaron Rodgers ended a Packer drive that might have sealed the deal earlier, putting the Cowboys down three scores.

It was an extra effort play, a play that previous editions of the Dallas Cowboys might have missed. He should’ve had a second pick as well, and he sacked Aaron Rodgers on the final drive in what many thought was the nail in the coffin before Aaron Rodgers did Aaron Rodgers things.

If you want to win in the playoffs, you need to feed Zeke.

The Cowboys went to lots of wide sets on third and short, opting to hit slant routes instead of pounding the ball up the middle, and it didn’t work out as well as they would’ve hoped several times. In order to win games in deeper rounds, I really think that they have to run the ball on third and short.

It’s amazing that this can even be considered an observation or analysis, yet here we are. When you spread the field out, you don’t just spread it out horizontally, you spread it vertically. When that vertical element gets tighter, it’s easier to defend. It’s spread offense 101, and apparently something that the Cowboys decided to completely scrap this game.

No matter the outcome, the Cowboys got outcoached.

Green Bay was playing with an insanely depleted secondary, and they still seemed to be everywhere. Dak’s pick wasn’t the fault of any Cowboys player, it was completely on the Green Bay coaching staff seeing that play and preparing their team for it. They called it from the beginning, and nailed it.

This franchise is good, they’re young, and they will be back. They just can’t make some of the mistakes they made tonight.
