West Orange-Stark’s defense is unbelievable.

I mean, what can you say about a team that good? They dominated every game they played this year, and didn’t give up a single offensive point to a Sweetwater offense that’s racked up some serious totals this year.

This is par for the course for the best pound-for-pound defensive unit in the entirety of Texas High School football. Everywhere you look there’s a star. Mandel Turner-King. Malick Phillips. Te’Ron Brown. The list goes on and on.

It’s time to stop talking about this year when we talk about WO-S’s 2016 defense. It’s time to start talking where they fit in with some of the all-time great units. Obviously there are those that have had more talent, but that doesn’t take away from the power of this Mustang front.

Sweetwater was unfazed.

The bright lights weren’t too bright for the team from West Texas. Sweetwater never let the moment get the best of them, and hung around with a stupidly talented team, a team that was in many areas visibly just better at many positions.

I’m especially impressed with Hunter Mobley and Luke James, two kids who never backed down from anyone the entire time. Sweetwater has some talent returning in wideout Kobe Clark and quarterback Chris Thompson, but they’ll miss guys as consistent as Mobley. Their Cover 0 looks were instrumental in getting turnovers and putting pressure on Jack Dallas.

The battle out in space was won by West Orange-Stark, but Sweetwater more than held their own.

There were several open wideouts for Sweetwater, and several times where the red Mustangs were completely blanketed. The matchups of Sweetwater’s small, quick kids on WO-S’s height and speed were intense to watch. In the end, WO-S was just too disciplined, and Sweetwater couldn’t find the seams they normally do.
