Irving Hopes 2017 Can Be A Year Of Improvement

You would have to go back to 2013 to find the last time Irving High School produced a winning season. Since then, the Tigers have struggled to replicate a season successful as that and are more than ready to begin working towards a better 2017 campaign.

With wins against Little Elm and district foe Irving MacArthur being their only visits to the win column, Irving will still have to continue chasing the other programs in their district as they hope to build a program that will eventually be able to compete with the stronger teams in the district.

The offseason will be a great chance to find themselves and reflect on how they wish to make 2017 a stronger season moving forward.

Key Departures
QB LeVante Briggs, RB Raekwon Young

Irving loses two key offensive players in Briggs and Young. Briggs who spent the season lined up under center and Young who was the team’s leading rusher are both gone and between the two accounted for ten total touchdowns.

Key Returners
RB James Miles III, DB Kevin Kirklin, QB DJ Stephenson

All District running back James Miles III, son of James “Boobie” Miles Jr., will be returning for his senior season after running for 369 yards and six touchdowns last season.

DJ Stephenson will also be able to replace the absence of Briggs at quarterback after spending time at the position last year and throwing for 291 yards. On defense, All-District safety Kevin Kirklin will be an asset at the secondary level.

Verdict

Irving still has a long way to go before playoff contention will be a routine aspect of the team. Though the previous seasons haven’t gone the way they would, there’s always the ability to make small adjustments and improve upon previous successes to ensure that the program takes steps in the right direction.

Irving will hopefully see some of those small improvements come to fruition in 2017 as they look to continue growing towards a successful 2017 campaign.
