The Itasca Wampus Cats’ season has officially come to an early close.
As first reported by Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Itasca is forfeiting its final four varsity games after injuries sidelined 13 players.
Head coach Matt Fonville confirmed the decision, saying the team will finish out the year with a sub-varsity schedule to protect his players.
The Wampus Cats, sitting at 0-6, have been outscored 256-28 this season, including 202-7 in their last four games. Their remaining opponents — Valley Mills, Rio Vista, Italy, and Axtell — will receive forfeit wins.
Fonville called it a tough but necessary decision: “I have to do what’s best for our program and our kids.”
